So, here’s exactly how this works: if your rounding time is, let’s say, 4 minutes, you get billed for 4-minute units. This means that, if you talk for 22 minutes and 6 seconds, with a rate of 1 cent/minute (a 4-minute rate is 4 cents), you will be billed for 5 x 4 cents = 20 cents, and the other 2 minutes and 6 seconds will be considered a 4-minute unit. So the total is 20+4=24 cents. If you have a shorter rounding time, like 1 second, with the same 1 cent/minute, and talk for the same 22 minutes and 6 seconds, you’ll be billed for exactly that: 22 x 1 cent = 22 cents, plus 0.1 x 1 cent (6 seconds is 1/10 of a minute, so it costs 1/10 of a cent). The total here is 22.1 cents. BUT usually, the longer your rounding time, the lower your rate. That’s why you will in fact be saving more money when you pick a longer rounding for longer, fewer phone calls.

3. As much as you can, try to stay away from payphones. Although your calling card’s rate is constant, there is a surcharge that will be added to your account when you use a payphone. This can go up to 99 cents. This can be the equivalent of 50-80 talk minutes, depending on your rate.

Spend the time to get all of these right, and you’ll save even more on your international calls. And believe me, it’s not even half as complicated as it may seem to you now. All the info on the country rates and rounding time can be found on the website you get your phone cards. As for the payphone, use them just in case of emergency.
